This brief discusses how states can use legislative action to
People—including students, job seekers, families, educators, communities, and policymakers—need access to data. But right now, state data systems do not meet their needs. This policy brief highlights that the time is right to set new goals for state data systems and defines what makes an effective statewide longitudinal data system and what it takes from leaders to make it a reality. Read for more on the historical context in which these systems exist, the problems and functions these systems should be designed to solve or fulfill, and the role of policymakers in improving data access.
